Tattoo artist branding photo session
Authenticity was non-negotiable for this session. I knew I had to capture Joseph’s cool vintage vibe, calm attitude and artistic skills to bring his brand to life. Amidst the poses and flash, the true essence of Joseph Durand needed to shine.
Joseph’s room in the tattoo shop was pretty small so we had to be creative with how to photograph the space. We brainstormed angles, experimented with lighting, and laughed through the unexpected moments of me on a ladder. Vertical was the way to go. I chose to do a bird’s eye view from above on a ladder. This created a more interesting perspective and allowed more things to be highlighted.
I also knew I wanted to capture him in action not just posing. Live action inking!
I used just one light to create a dark, artsy vibe which also helped not highlight certain non-aesthetically pleasing parts of the room.
If you know me and my photography style, you know that I love a good prop! The more props, branding materials and personality you can bring to your session the more authentically your photos will represent your brand.
Check out Joseph’s pipe! He’s not a smoker but he does appreciate the joy of props.
In the last part of the branding session, I took photos of Joseph actually tattooing a client. It was awesome being able to capture some behind-the scenes-moments. Of course I didn’t stay until the final reveal but it was nice to see some of the process.
