When is the Best Time to Get Your Senior Photos?
Senior year is a BIG DEAL. It’s a year of lasts, of firsts, and of making memories that will stick with you long after you've graduated. One of the first “senior things” you’ll check off your list? Your senior photos! But when’s the best time to book them—summer or fall? Let’s break it down.
☀️ Team Summer – Sunshine & Flexibility ☀️
If you're the type who likes to plan ahead, summer might be perfect for you. Here’s why:
You’ve got time: School’s out, which means your schedule is way more flexible. No juggling after-school practices, homework, or club meetings—just you and your planner full of possibilities.
Golden weather: Summer in the Portland area is usually a safe bet for sunshine. You’ll dodge the unpredictable fall drizzle and cloudy skies that can sneak up on you later in the year.
Nature at it’s finest: From rivers you’ll wanna dip your toes in to wildflower fields, Oregon’s outdoor beauty is in full bloom during summer. Think dreamy golden-hour lighting and vibrant backdrops. Sunflowers and lavender are in bloom at this time
Weekday options: Not being tied to weekends means you have better availability so ecen if you’re working a summer job until the afternoon you can still have your photo session in early even with plenty of golden sun
Basically: Summer senior sessions are a vibe—warm, laid-back, and full of sun-soaked freedom.
🍁 Team Fall – Sweaters, Boots & That Senior Feeling
Okay, okay, so summer has a lot going for it but—fall has a pretty solid case too. By the time September rolls around, you’re not just a rising senior…you are a senior. That makes your photos feel a little more official, right?
Hello, fall fashion: Cozy sweaters, boots, scarves—fall gives you that timeless, layered look that photographs beautifully. Plus, the golden leaves? Chef’s kiss.
yeah it might rain, but some seniors actually embrace that artsy vibe
Gorgeous golden tones: With colorful leaves, soft light, and warm tones in the environment, your photos can look straight out of a Pinterest board. Even cloudy days work in your favor—they create soft, flattering light.
It’s still warm(ish): Early fall in Portland still offers decent weather, but keep in mind October can be a bit of a wildcard—hello, surprise rain showers.
Iconic backdrops: Think: crisp leaves, pumpkin patches, tree-lined paths with fiery foliage—fall gives you a rich, cinematic setting that summer just can’t replicate.
A nostalgic vibe: Fall senior photos have a cozy feel that captures the emotion of your final year in a special way.
But here’s the catch: Fall = busy. Between football games, homecoming, AP classes, and all the chaos of back-to-school season, finding time to squeeze in a photo session can feel a bit chaotic.
And don’t forget—most Portland-area high schools have yearbook photo deadlines between the end of October and early November. That’s not a ton of wiggle room if you’re planning to wait until the leaves start changing.
📆 So... When’s Really the Best Time?
Honestly? There’s no wrong answer. It depends on your vibe, your schedule, and what kind of experience you’re going for.
Want glowing summer light, more flexibility, and flower fields? Book for summer.
Want cozy sweaters, colorful leaves, and that I'm finally a senior energy? Go for fall—but plan early.
