5 Tips to Love your Headshots

Does the word “headshot” give you a little shiver? Has “Get new headshots” been lingering on your to-do list for months? Or is the ideas of headshot just so boooriing?

Let’s change that! Headshots don’t have to be a dreaded chore, and they can be anything but boring when done right. Professional headshots should show you in the best light possible (see what I did there? #photographerjokes). In today’s digital world, your headshot is more than just a picture—it’s your first impression. That’s why it’s so important to ensure your headshot is professional, fresh, and modern. It’s your chance to stand out and let your personality shine!

Here are 5 tips to help you rock your next headshot session and end up with photos you’ll absolutely love:

  1. What to wear:

This is the most frequently asked question I get about headshots. Here are my tips for what to wear to your headshot session:

  • V-necks are most flattering but avoid to0 low of a neckline

  • Small, classic, simple jewlery tha doesn’t distract from your face

  • Tailored, layered clothes like an open blazer or well fitting cardigan is a flattering choice

  • If you’re having pro hair and makeup done, make sure that your MUA knows how to make you look natural and look/feel like you

  • Avoid turtlenecks which can chop the neck awkwardly on camera

  • Avoid bold, distracting patterns and logo.

  • Jewel tones like blue, green and purple are nice for color and flattering on most people

2. Think about what style of headshot you want

  • Do you like studio or environmental headshots? Posed or candid? Traditional tight headshot crop, or more full-body?

  • We all need headshots, but we don’t all need the same kind of headshot. While some industries and companies call for a traditional studio headshot, the kind we usually think of when we think “headshot”—others allow for a more creative take on the them.

3. Choose a photographer that’s right for you

I cannot tell you the number of clients who come to me because they hate the headshots they got elsewhere. Typically, they either 1. Thought all headshots were created equal or 2. Simply didn’t want to spend the money on a good one. Or at least they didn’t think they did.

-Shop for portfolio over prices, and keep this in mind:

YOUR HEADSHOT IS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION TO YOUR POTENTIAL CLIENTS.

Think about what that means to your business, and what it’s worth to you. EVERYTHING you put out into the world is a representation of your professional self and your personal brand, from the feel of your business cards to the way to answer the phone to—you guessed it!—your headshot.

Choose a photographer whose style you love, and whose personality makes you feel comfortable—I cannot tell you how important that second part is. Call a few photographers, and talk to them over the phone—get a feel for how they do things. The most important factor to a great picture is you being comfortable and at ease—but more on that in just a few.

4. Keep it real

Remember the primary purpose of your headshot: to give clients an authentic and honest impression of who you are. Too often, I meet people who look completely different from their headshots—defeating the entire purpose!

I’m not a fan of excessive Photoshop editing that results in an over-airbrushed, unrealistic look. Instead, I believe in retouching to highlight your best features while staying true to your natural self. It’s also important not to obsess over every perceived flaw. A skilled photographer will focus on what makes you unique and ensure you look your best without losing your authenticity.

5. Be kind to yourself

Alright, I know this might be a tough one, but hear me out: let go of the stress and overthinking about getting a headshot.

I get it—being in front of a camera can make anyone feel self-conscious (trust me, I’ve been there too). But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be a painful experience!

Start by finding a photographer who puts you at ease from the very first conversation. Choose someone whose personality clicks with yours—it makes all the difference. The more comfortable you feel during the shoot, the more confident you’ll look in your photos, and the happier you’ll be with the results.

When I shoot headshots, I don’t leave you wondering what you’re looking like on camera. I let you see back of my camera to that you can adjust what you don’t like and do more of what you do like.

See? Getting a headshot can actually be easy—and even fun!

If you’ve been putting off new headshots for the last 10 years for one reason or another (don’t worry, you’re not alone) and it’s time for a new one, there’s no time like the present.
